Music notes from Fort Worden Park, Washington

Jazz musicians from all levels of talent - and age - descend upon this prime northwest location to learn and play jazz. The setting for classes, rehearsals and concerts is a Washington State Park on the northern point of the Olympic Peninsula, just across the Strait from Victoria, B.C. Canada. Fort Worden was a former army camp and the barracks now serve as dormitories. The army mess hall has been redesigned to provide nutritional nourishment for the over 500 participants and faculty for the workshop.

Dick signed up to attend the arranging workshop, where he has been introduced into the beauty of dissonance chords to cause an emotional effect. Afternoons are spent learning more about trombone from Jeff Wigham - a German/American trombone genius. During spare moments, he jams with anyone who is around...last night a young trombonist taught him some new tricks.

My time is spent writing, reading and walking on the beach. The white building in the photo was a former army hospital, now a classroom for workshops in the arts. Port Townsend summers offer a variety of creative workshops: writing, music, poetry and more.
