Pactola Lake was formed through construction of the Pactola Dam...bringing electricity to the greater Hills areas. The lake is ringed by large pondorosa pines that cling its steep banks. Our lunch spot was at the top of the lakeside overlook. Later, we drove to the basin and marveled at the power of water flowing over the spillway.
Leaving the Pactola area, we drove north to Lead (pronounced leed). This town emerged with discovery of gold ore. The gold mine brought workers and families to the area. The Homestead Gold Mine was an open air mine (above ground) and more than 8000 miles underground. Mining operations closed in the late 1900's but it remains a popular attraction.
