Iowa Flood Disaster Remains

Cedar Rapids is gradually repairing damage from the 2008 flood, but work is slow and the end is not in sight. We toured the flood damaged areas and were shocked at the hundreds of empty shells of houses, where basements have caved, insides are gutted to rid the rotted wood. Government officials marked houses to designate those that can be entered for repair only. Some had contractor signs posted in front and work begun. Porta-potties line the streets for workers and debris is piled on front lawns. Downtown buildings are in better shape, as many return to work in top floors - with bottom floors boarded up to cover broken windows.
It will be years before CR returns to full prosperity.
